Ready to bring on your Christmas Spirit?

Hello December – finally! Which means the Christmas countdown can officially begin. It’s my favourite time of year. I’m not a Christian but I’ve always loved Christmas. There’s something about this time of year that makes me feel really good – well several reasons actually. To me, the Christmas spirit is about joy, love, kindness and giving. Here are 7 things that are bound to bring on your Christmas spirit – they work for me every year. If you’ve already got plenty of it on, maybe you’ll find one of my wellness posts a good read.

#1. Music to hum and sing any time of day

Fa-La-La-La-La…La-La-La-La! Christmas music, it really is the best. If joy had a voice, I think Christmas music would be one form of it. It makes everything cheery and fits right in with any place – your home, workplace, shopping centres (malls for you Americans :), in the car and even hospitals. There is some form of it to suit everyone’s taste from traditional (like ‘Jingle Bells‘) to modern (think Michael Buble). Some of them are great works of art that have stood the test of time, and that’s simply because of the joy that Christmas music brings to people. If you need a good dose of Christmas spirit, pop some Christmas music on – it’ll have you humming, singing and twirling around anytime – anywhere.

#2. Best festive decorations of the year

What’s one of the first things that come to mind when you think of Christmas? I bet Christmas decorations is one of them. To me, they are the best festive decorations of the year (sorry, not sorry Halloween!). Putting up your Christmas tree and decorations are sure to help you get the holiday spirit on. Get creative and play will new themes and colours, without using the same decorations from 10 years ago – Christmas can be pink and purple too, if that’s what makes you happy. It’s also a great activity to get the family involved – turn some Christmas music on for added effect!

#3. Meditative gift wrapping

Anyone else as crazy about gift wrapping as I am? Gifts are a very normal part of Christmas. In fact, gift shopping is another great way to get festive and have fun. But things shouldn’t end there. Don’t simply get a random person at the gift wrapping counter to sort things out for you – please! Gifts aren’t complete without your love and care in how they are wrapped and presented. And trust me, if you really get into it, gift wrapping can be therapeutic. I love carefully picking out wrapping paper, getting my gift-wrapping supply box out and settling down for a hearty gift wrapping session. You-tube or Pinterest ideas on how to up your wrapping game – have fun with it. Complete wrapping with bows and little gift tags. Your Christmas spirit will be shining bright as you look at the lovingly wrapped gifts sitting under the tree.

#4. When joy comes on a plate

Just looking at this picture of Christmas food makes me smile! When you’re a foodie like me, Christmas time is paradise because of all the great food. If you enjoy cooking, you’ll get into the spirit of things as you bake fruit cake, make trifle or do your roast. If cooking isn’t for you, that’s ok. All you need is a waft of the delicious aroma coming off what’s cooking or a look at a beautifully set table heaped with Christmas food, to feel the holiday cheer.

#5. Celebrating with family and friends

Holidays are always better when shared with friends and family. Christmas wouldn’t feel right without it. If you need a burst of Christmas spirit, make sure you get together with family and friends to celebrate. Life’s too short to spend the holidays working. Take a break, have some wine and share some laughs with your loved ones.

#6. Spreading the love

Christmas is about giving. We heap gifts under the Christmas tree for family and friends, which is great. That’s not all though. For me, nothing brings on the Christmas spirit as much as spreading the love to those in need. It doesn’t need to be much, do what you can. It’s the thought and effort that counts. I love contributing to a toy drive or making a small hamper or two for a family in need. A random act of kindness can go a long way and the benefits are instantaneous. It gives you a great sense of fulfilment and joy. To the receiver, it might well be a blessing. Give what you can and you’ll get all the Christmas spirit you need.

#7. Happy holidays

What’s Christmas without the holidays – that would be Christmas in July! Christmas cheer comes easy when looking forward to the holidays. Don’t be a busy bee, take some time off to really enjoy Christmas and spend quality time with family/ friends. I don’t typically like to travel over the holidays because things get insanely crowded and expensive. But if that doesn’t bother you, go for it. I love taking a break just to wind down (with or without wine), watch Christmas movies or head to the beach with family (because it’s Christmas in summer for us Melbournians!).

There is a clipart of a Christmas tree in the middle with 7 baubles numbered 1 to 7. Text reads, "Ready to bring on your Christmas spirit? 1. Feel the music, 2. Decor like no other, 3. Get wrapped up, 4. Eat good, 5. Make time for family/ friends, 6. Spread the love and 7. Enjoy the holidays. janontheblog.com"

These 7 things are sure to boost your Christmas spirit. Remember that the goal is to slow down, feel the joy and spread the love. However you celebrate it, it’s simply a great time of year.

What helps you get into the spirit of Christmas? Are any of these your go-to as well?

  1. Christmas songs and Christmas movies put me in the spirit of the holidays. But overall I love Christmas because of the decorations and the yummy holiday treats. With the Christmas trees, the stockings, Santa Claus, and the lights, it’s a beautiful holiday to celebrate! Thanks for sharing your tips on getting in the Christmas spirit. One of my favorite Christmas songs is “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber, I just love that song haha!

    1. Aww I can tell you’re quite passionate about Christmas – as am I! Thanks for sharing what gets you spirit. Mmm Mistletoe – not sure if I’ve heard that, might give it a go. ☺️

      1. You might be more passionate about Christmas than I am because I mostly just go with the flow of the holidays haha! Of course. Oh “Mistletoe” is amazing! I sang that song with my intermediate school chorus, so I have a slight attachment to that song! 🙂

      2. Ooohhh nice! Singing is such fun! Yup I was in the school choir (too many many years ago 😂🤪). Now it’s mostly singing in the car or at karaoke places 😂 🎤

      3. Aww thats cool you were in choir. I’ve only been to a karaoke place once, but I’d love to go back one day! Do you sing while you drive? I don’t know how people manage to do that.

Do you get snow? It’s unfortunately summer in Melbourne – so more like Christmas on the beach for us 😂
